Waikiki to the North Shore

Haleiwa, the North Shore’s main town, sits roughly 30 to 35 miles (50 to 55 km) from Waikiki. That is about an hour in a car on a good day, well over an hour on the bus, and a whole day if you go the long way round. Here is every way to get there, what each costs in 2026 and how to pick.

The three ways to get there

Drive through the middle (fastest): H-1 west, H-2 north past the pineapple fields of Wahiawa and the Dole Plantation, then down to Haleiwa on Kamehameha Highway. Allow about an hour outside rush hour. On big-surf weekends the last few miles along the coast can crawl, and beach parking at Waimea Bay and Pipeline fills by mid-morning. Drive the windward coast (scenic): out past Hanauma Bay, Halona Blowhole, Kualoa and Laie and in from the east at Kahuku. It is two hours or more of driving, which is why most circle-island tours run it as a loop and come back through the middle. TheBus: route 52 runs from Ala Moana Center to Haleiwa through Wahiawa, and route 60 goes round the windward side; a ride is $3 with a HOLO card ($3.25 cash), but expect well over an hour each way and plan generous buffers.

What each option really costs

The bus is the cheapest: a few dollars each way, though it will not stop at viewpoints and the day becomes mostly transit. A rental car means a day’s hire, gas, and Waikiki hotel parking on top, plus hunting for a space at packed beach lots. The tours on our homepage start at about $99 to $100 with Waikiki pickup and drop-off, a driver-guide and a planned route; the waterfall, snorkel and small-group days run $149 to $185 and include Waimea Valley entry or gear. For two people with a car already, driving usually wins. For solo travelers, first-timers and anyone who would rather look out of the window than at a map, a tour is the simpler buy.

How to pick

Want the most of Oahu in one go: take the big-coach Circle Island and Haleiwa tour, which picks up across Waikiki from 6:30 AM. Want to swim: pick the Waimea waterfall tour or the Surf Bus beach day. Want flexibility and a sunset at Sunset Beach: rent a car and use our one-day itinerary. Either way, leave early: traffic out of Honolulu and on the North Shore’s single highway is the one thing that ruins the day.
